4 - SUMMARIZING PROSE

PROSE

Fiction  vs.  Non-fiction
Novel (Gothic, Romantic, Satirical, Historical, Realistic, Detective, Thriller,
Crime, Adventure, Fantasy, Biographical, Autobiographical)

           The purpose of a novel is to tell a story based on a well-structured
plot. (Sometimes the main plot is joined to minor plots.)

The point of the view is the perspective of how the story is being
told.  Different points of views are:
-          first person when one or more characters
tells the story (different points of views);
-          the omniscient narrator (not part of the story)
(gives different points of views);
(intrusive  ---  non-instrusive)
-          third person narrator (one point of view).

In a novel the characters can be divided into main or minor
characters. There can be a clear distinction between characters,
they can be “round” (complex)  or “flat” (simple).

The setting is where and  when the events of a narrative happen.
The place is where the story is or stories are set.
The time is the period in which the story takes place.
The events of the story can be “synchronic” (chronological)
 or “diachronic” (non-chronological, i.e. / e.g. flashbacks or
 flash-forwards)

The theme is a general topic of discussion.

Tone (colloquial or formal, familiar or polite, ironic or solemn,
Personal or impersonal, serious or condescending, etc.)

Register  includes the variety of language (e.g. legal,
Scientific, liturgical, etc.)
